WINDHOEK, 12 APR (NAMPA) - More than 300 cyclists are expected to take part in the 16th edition of the annual Omaruru Spar Cycle Challenge on Saturday.
Since its inception 16 years ago the event, which started as a social event, grew to such an extent that participants now win prize money valued at N.dollars 42 000.
Berthold Karumendu, regional sport officer for the Ministry of Sport, Youth and National Service, said during the launch here on Tuesday one of their duties in the ministry is grassroots development and mass participation in sport.
He added that if it was not for partner sponsors like First National Bank Omaruru Branch and the Spar Omaruru supermarket such events will not take place.
FNB Omaruru contributed N.dollars 20 000 and main sponsor Spar Omaruru N.dollars 45 000 towards the event.
Registration ends Friday evening. Speculations are rife that 2015 winner Costa Seibeb will enter to defend his title.
Riders will take part in races over 25 kilometres (km), 60km or 106km.
The three best cyclists in the senior category (106 km) can win between N.dollars 3 000 as first place and N.dollars 1 000 for third place, while riders in the 60km distance can win between N.dollars 750 as first place and N.dollars 250 for a third place.
Participants can enter in any of the 10 categories, ranging from Masters men and women to fun rides.
There will be intervals of 30 minutes in the starting time of the different distances, with riders participating in the 106km distance set to take off at 08h00 in the main street of the town.
The riders will take the road to Kalkfeld and back, with the first riders in the 106km distance expected back at about 10h30.
