WINDHOEK, 12 SEP (NAMPA) – The newly-elected Southern African Development Community (SADC) Executive Secretary, Dr Stergomena Tax on Wednesday paid a courtesy call on President Hifikepunye Pohamba.
The meeting took place just a few hours before the opening session of the SADC Troika’s summit for the Organ on Politics, Defence and Security.
The SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security is managed on a Troika basis, and is responsible for promoting peace and security in the SADC region.
Namibia took over the leadership of the Troika during the annual SADC Heads of State and Government Summit, which took place in Lilongwe, Malawi in August this year.
Dr Tax was the first female elected to head the organisation as the new SADC Executive Secretary in August this year during the SADC Heads of State and Government Summit in Lilongwe.
She succeeded Tomaz Salomao, who held the position for the last eight years.
In his welcoming remarks before the closed-door meeting, President Pohamba congratulated Tax for having been elected for the position.
“You are going down in history as the first woman to head SADC,” he said.
Dr Tax assured the Head of State and current Chair of the SADC Troika for the Organ on Politics, Defence and Security that she will try to the best of her abilities to meet the expectations of the Heads of State and Government within the region.
