KEETMANSHOOP, 04 APR (NAMPA) – The man accused of the death of his father after allegedly setting their shack on fire over the weekend, made a first appearance in the Keetmanshoop Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
Nicodemus Vincent Booysen, 26, is charged with one count each of murder, arson and damage to property read with the provisions of the Combating of Domestic Violence Act.
The suspect’s father, Willem Booysen, 63, died early Saturday morning after the shack he was in caught fire.
The Namibian Police arrested the younger Booysen over the weekend, on allegations that he deliberately set the shack on fire by lighting a match and throwing it into the shack while the pensioner was asleep.
In court, the suspect indicated that he would apply for a Government-funded defence lawyer, after his rights were read to him.
Magistrate Philanda Christiaan postponed the hearing to 31 May for him to obtain legal representation and to allow for further investigations on the request of prosecutor Yvonne McLeod ,who also opposed bail in the meantime, citing the seriousness and sensitivity of the case.
