RUNDU, 26 MAR (NAMPA) – Kavango East regional governor Samuel Mbambo says his region is proud to host the 16th edition of The Namibian Newspaper Cup.
Speaking at the commencement of the games here on Friday, Mbambo said he trusts the Cup will be memorable for football players and fans, adding that a competent organising committee put in place all required logistics for the successful hosting of the tournament.
“I am cognisant of the fact that soccer, like any other sport, is a game of emotion, but being a nation that is passionate about sports, let us exercise a culture of sportsmanship and be tolerant towards each other,” he said.
He further noted that The Namibian Newspaper Cup, which was launched in 2001, has become one of the most exciting competitions on the country’s football calendar.
“The annual showpiece has not only grown in leaps and bounds but has become an annual opportunity where hidden and raw talents are given an opportunity to showcase their skills and talents to the nation,” the governor said.
He also described the Cup as a platform where under-20 regional players and managers are brought together to “celebrate the beauty of football, the most popular sport in the world”.
Mbambo also said he is optimistic that the economy of his region will be boosted as hundreds of thousands of Namibian dollars will be spent on amongst others accommodation during the four days over which the event takes place.
The 2016 The Namibian Newspaper Cup ends on Monday.
The first match of the tournament, between the Kavango West and Kunene regional teams, ended in a one-all draw.
