WINDHOEK, 24 MAR (NAMPA) – A 39-year-old foreign national was arrested at Musheshe village in the Kavango West Region on Thursday for possession of counterfeit cigarettes worth N.dollars 130 000.
The suspect was arrested at about 03h00 after police officers at the roadblock between Rundu and Nkurenkuru searched the vehicle he was driving.
Namibian Police Force (NamPol) Spokesperson, Inspector Slogan Matheus said in a media statement issued on Thursday, the driver, whose identity and nationality are still unknown, was without valid documentation authorising him to be in Namibia.
The suspect has been detained at the Kahenge Police Station.
Matheus added that this is the third consignment of counterfeit cigarettes recovered by NamPol since a special operation was launched in the Kavango West Region, covering the Independence and Easter long weekends.
The first consignment of counterfeit cigarettes was intercepted at the Siminya Border Post on Tuesday, with a total value of N.dollars 21 000.
The second consignment of counterfeit cigarettes was recovered on the same day at the Nkurenkuru Open Market, with a street value of N.dollars 52 000.

NamPol also warned those who enter the country without valid documents that they will be arrested if found to be in Namibia illegally.
