OSHAKATI, 24 MAR (NAMPA) – The Oshana regional team that will participate in the 2016 Namibian Newspaper Cup paid a courtesy call on the Oshana Regional Council (RC) at Oshakati on Wednesday.
The team visited the regional council to seek the region’s blessing before leaving for Rundu in the Kavango East Region, where the Namibian Newspaper Cup competition is taking place as from Friday.
Speaking to players, Chairperson of the Oshana RC, Gerson Kapenda urged them to keep up the team spirit and work together from the beginning of the competition if they are to be victorious.
Kapenda reminded the players and the coaching team that the whole region will be watching their performance during the competition with the hope that they will come home with a trophy.
“See yourselves as the Oshana Region and not as individual players. Remember, your victory in this competition will make all of us in the region feel proud,” he said.
Speaking at the same occasion, the head coach of the team, Alex Itumba said they have prepared well for the competition.
“It is our intention to win the cup this time around,” he said.
Oshana was the first northern region to win the popular Newspaper Cup by beating Khomas 2-1 in the final at the Keetmanshoop Showground in 2007.
This year’s tournament ends on Monday.
