RUNDU, 09 MAR (NAMPA) – The Rundu Secondary School hostel, one of two hostels selected to serve as accommodation for players during the Namibian Newspaper Cup in Rundu, is being renovated after particularly the kitchen was deemed not fit for players to eat from.
The renovations worth about N.dollars 1.8 million started last Monday, the chairperson of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) in the Kavango East Region, Ludwig Thikusho told Nampa on Monday.
The 16th edition of the Namibian Newspaper Cup will take place from 24 to 28 March 2016.
Thikusho said 350 players will be housed at the Rundu Secondary School and Maria Mwengere Youth Centre hostels.
A delegation of the Namibia Football Association (NFA) visited the region last November to inspect the facilities and they asked that the Rundu Secondary School hostel be renovated.
“One of the concerns pointed out by the NFA were the state of the kitchen where players’ food would be prepared. The football association made it clear that it would not allow the preparation of players’ food in a kitchen such as the one at the hostel and would amongst others want the tiles replaced,” Thikusho said.
Other problems were amongst broken windows, leaking roofs, exposed electric wiring and the general state of the rooms and kitchen ceilings. The doors of many rooms could also cannot be locked.
Thikusho said four blocks of the hostel are being renovated.
With the games only two weeks away, he said he is confident the renovations will be completed in time, as it is their wish to see the tournament take place in the region for the very first time.
A NFA delegation is expected to visit the region again next Thursday to see how far preparations for the games are.
