WINDHOEK, 09 MAR (NAMPA) – National under-20 football team coach Gerald Guther is optimistic his players will qualify for the 20th edition of the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) set for Zambia in 2017.
He has been putting 30 players through their paces for the past three weeks at the Namibia Football Association Technical Centre in preparation for their first-round clash against Swaziland.
The match will be played on 02 April in Mbabane, Swaziland, with the return leg scheduled for Windhoek on 23 April 2016.
Speaking to Nampa on Tuesday, Guther said his aim is to qualify the team to the African Cup.
“We have never had such a positive draw like we did this year. I am looking forward to getting good results,” he said.
The coach added that they do not know a lot about their opponents, but he has a good team that can compete with any opponent.
“All I know about the Swaziland team is that they are also building a new team just like us. With regards to the way they play, I really don’t know anything about them, but I believe in the team we are currently having.
“Some of these players have been together from U-17 level and they know each other very well. I travelled with the team for three weeks to Ghana and we came back without losing a game, and if we play the same way we did in Ghana, we can get positive results from our game against Swaziland,” said Guther.
The winner of that fixture will meet South Africa in the second round in May/June, after which a third and final round awaits the winner for a place in Zambia next year.
Gunter said his final 20-man squad will be announced two weeks before the team travel to Swaziland.
