OTJIWARONGO, 05 MAR (NAMPA) - A 30-year-old man accused of strangling his girlfriend to death at Grootfontein in October 2013 was on Thursday sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Carlo Ruan Feris was convicted on a charge of murder by Otjiwarongo Regional Magistrate Marilize du Plessis.
According to the charge sheet read out in court on Thursday, Feris strangled his girlfriend and mother of his now four-year-old daughter, Uschi Schwarz, at her house in Luiperdheuwel in Grootfontein.
The court documents indicate that at the time of Schwarzs death, Feris was the only other person in the house besides their daughter.
It is alleged that Feris strangled Schwarz with his bare hands. He then apparently kept her lifeless body in the house from midnight to around 04h00 on 14 October 2013.
He then later on informed the Grootfontein Police Station that he had killed Schwarz, and thereafter made a failed attempt at committing suicide.
Feris did not deny the charges against him in court.
His State-funded (Legal Aid) lawyer Kenneth Siyambango asked the court for a lenient sentence considering that Feris is now his daughters only parent.
Siyambango said he also showed remorse during the entire court proceedings.
Prosecutor Leonard Tjiveze, who represented the State, said because Feris had taken the life of Schwarz, he deserves the maximum sentence.
Magistrate Du Plessis then sentenced him to 20 years in jail.
