OSHAKATI, 25 FEB (NAMPA) – A Grade 12 learner of the Iipumbu Secondary School at Oshakati in the Omusati Region allegedly committed suicide on Monday evening.
Augustinus Stefanus, 19, was found hanging from a rope in his hostel room at the school.
The incident took place between 19h00 and 21h00 on Monday while the other learners were attending evening study.
Stefanus was discovered by his roommates, who immediately notified the hostel superintended Fredrick Kahwadi, who then called the police to the scene.
Acting school principal, Chrisco Siyoto confirmed the death to Nampa on Thursday, saying the entire school is deeply shocked by the incident.
He said the deceased left a suicide note written in the back of one of his notebooks, but he was not at liberty to reveal that information.
A roommate to the deceased claimed that Stefanus complained of a headache on Sunday after the evening study. He was then accompanied by a close friend to a hospital on Monday morning and only returned around 16h00.
The friend also stated that Stefanus could not attend the afternoon and evening study sessions on Monday, as he continued to complain of a headache.
Siyoto described Stefanus as a very quiet learner, who excelled in his academics.
“We have really lost an asset as Stefanus was an intelligent young man and was top of his class,” he said.
Stefanus’s class teacher also described him as a quiet person who never got into any disciplinary trouble as he was always well behaved.
“He was too quiet, which made it difficult for us to detect whether there was anything bothering him,” she stated.
Siyoto described the incident as very traumatising, as this is the second time an event of this sort had taken place at the school in three years.
“We are currently working with social workers to help the students and staff, especially the teacher who had gone through a similar tragedy as the learner who committed suicide in 2013 was also in her class.
A memorial service is scheduled for Friday at 09h00 at the school.
