WINDHOEK, 19 FEB (NAMPA) – Oshakati-based Namibia Premier League (NPL) outfit Young Chiefs are aiming to finish in the top eight of Namibia’s elite league during the 2015/16 season.
Young Chiefs, who gained promotion to the Premier League after winning the 2014/15 North West First Division Stream, are currently ninth on the log with 24 points from 19 games.
Tigers are at the top of the NPL log with 51 points, while Black Africa are second with 40 points. Orlando Pirates are third with 33 points, African Stars fourth with 32 points, and Blue Waters fifth position with 29 points.
The NPL consists of 16 teams. Each team plays 30 games per season.
With only 11 games to go before the 2015/16 season comes to an end, Young Chiefs have collected 10 points from their last four games, winning three and drawing one.
Going into the weekends’ fixtures against Mighty Gunners in Otjiwarongo on Saturday and then Citizens on Sunday at the Sam Nujoma Stadium in Windhoek, Young Chiefs public relations officer Bella Nandjigwa said the team is currently on a good run and they are ready to collect the maximum points over the weekend.
“The team spirit is currently good and we are ready to continue where we left off two weeks ago when we played Black Africa and Flamingoes at the Uukwangula Stadium. The team has improved drastically from the way we played in the first leg.
“In 2015 we were still newcomers in the league but we have now adapted to the way things work at Premier League level. Winning games is what we will be doing whenever we step on to the field of play,” he said.
In their last two games, Young Chiefs beat Black Africa 2-0 and beat Flamingoes with the same score line.
Nandjigwa added that the team is looking for a good finish in its first season in the NPL.
“We are hoping at the end of the season we will be part of the top eight teams, but ending fifth or sixth will be a bonus for us,” he said.
Other fixtures for the weekend are:
