Police officer arrested for drug dealing gets bail

KEETMANSHOOP, 17 FEB (NAMPA) A police officer arrested on two counts of drug dealing was Wednesday granted bail in the Keetmanshoop Magistrates Court.
Eric Basson, 30, was arrested on 15 January after a raid at his house where cannabis and mandrax tablets were found hidden in a package alongside a knife and cell-phone.
The Namibian Police Force (NamPol) suspect Basson planned to smuggle the items into the police holding cells during his night shift later that day.
NamPol also arrested a Keetmanshoop woman, Eveline Hartung, 42, for allegedly having supplied the drugs to Basson for him to deliver the substances to her son who is in police custody.
Hartung was also granted bail on Wednesday.
The case was postponed to 28 April 2016 for further investigations and to allow the accused to obtain legal aid.
Principal Magistrate Philanda Christiaan heard the case and Yvonne McLeod prosecuted.
