OTJIWARONGO, 07 FEB (NAMPA) - A 60-year-old man died on Friday evening after he allegedly fell off a moving truck in which he was travelling with two other passengers.
Spokesperson of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) in the Otjozondjupa Region, Warrant Officer Maureen Mbeha told Nampa on Sunday that the man has been identified as Alfred Neibeb.
“He was a resident of Werda Government Resettlement Farm situated north of Outjo near the Etosha National Game Park,” said Mbeha, adding that his close relatives have been informed of his death.
The incident occurred on Friday evening at approximately 22h00 on the Outjo-Otavi gravel road, some 90 kilometres north-east of Outjo in the Otjozondjupa Region.
It is suspected Neibeb fell off a moving truck after he and two other occupants sat onto some planks which were carried on the back of the open truck.
According to Mbeha, the driver of the truck had only realised that Neibeb was missing from the truck after he made a stop at Farm Grens.
The driver then drove back to look for him, and his lifeless body was found alongside the road some 20 kilometres from Farm Grens.
The police were informed and a case of culpable homicide was opened at Outjo Police Station on Friday.
In a separate incident, 13 occupants of a minibus including its 28-year-old driver survived a road accident on Saturday afternoon after the driver lost control over the minibus on a curve, and overturned it on the road between Otavi and Otjiwarongo.
The accident occurred some 20 kilometres south of Otavi in the Otjozondjupa Region.
Mbeha said nine occupants, mostly women, had sustained serious to slight injuries and were taken to the Tsumeb and Otjiwarongo State Hospitals shortly after the accident.
The police officer said the occupants are aged between six and 44 years.
Mbeha explained that a 21-year-old male and a 35-year-old female have since been transferred from the Tsumeb State Hospital to Katutura Intermediate State Hospital in the capital in a critical condition.
She said that the minibus was travelling from Walvis Bay in the Erongo Region to Oshakati in the Oshana Region.
Police investigations in both matters continue.
