WINDHOEK, 03 SEP (NAMPA) – The City of Windhoek (CoW) and China’s Chongqing Municipality on Monday signed a Memorandum of Understanding on municipal governance and economic development.
Windhoek Mayor Agnes Kafula and Secretary of the Discipline Committee of the Communist Party of the Peoples’ Republic of China (CPC)’s Chongqing Municipal Committee, Xu Songnan, signed the MoU on behalf of the two parties.
Xu also serves as a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Chongqing Municipal Committee.
In a statement issued to Nampa on Tuesday, Kafula said the MoU covers areas based on principles of friendship such as trade and investment; Information and Communication Technology (ICT); urban planning and housing; water management; culture; and early childhood education.
“I am also glad to mention that, by signing this MoU, we agree to enhance the establishment of a sister-city relation between the City of Windhoek and Chongqing Municipal Peoples’ Government, while promoting comprehensive cooperation in different areas,” she said.
Kafula gave her assurance that the CoW will work tirelessly towards the implementation of this MoU, and strive to enhance the quality of life of all people.
The mayor said Namibia and China enjoy historic fraternal relations dating back from the days of the liberation struggle and forged by founding fathers Dr Sam Nujoma and Chairman Mao Zedong, who united the two nations.
She said these relations continued at Independence through a number of bilateral relations at the two governments’ various levels.
“I am happy that these relations are steadily reaching down to our grassroots communities through bilateral co-operations at municipal level. We have been, since 1996, cooperating with our friends in the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government and are equally gratified that Chongqing is joining hands with us today,” said Kafula.
Xu, on behalf of the Chongqing Municipality, donated N.dollars 300 000 to Highline Secondary School in Katutura.
