The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has challenged the Department of Mineral Resources to do something about Impala Platinum Mines in Rustenburg, North West.

This as four mineworkers died following a fire which broke out at the mine on Friday.

The union says this brings the number of fatalities since last month to seven.

Mineral Resources Minister, Mosebenzi Zwane, has since sent condolences to the affected families.

NUM's Health and Safety Secretary, Erick Gcilitshana, says it is clear that workers lives are in danger.

“We are informed from our sources that this fire was detected before even workers could proceed underground. It was taken lightly. Whoever is responsible within management must be held accountable.”

The department was unavailable for comment.
