Two drown in canal at Mariental

WINDHOEK, 01 SEP (NAMPA) – Two people drowned in a canal at Mariental in the Hardap Region over the weekend.
Namibian Police Force (NamPol) spokesperson Chief Inspector Kauna Shikwambi said during the weekly crime briefing in the capital on Sunday a group of boys were walking by the canal at the Hardap Plot on Saturday when one of them accidentally fell into the canal.
The incident occurred at around 16h30, and the 11-year-old deceased’s body was recovered at around 18h00.
Shikwambi said his next of kin had not yet been informed, and police investigations continue.
The other incident involved the 34-year-old Simon Muronga Hausiku, who fell into the canal at around 02h00 on Sunday morning.
The NamPol spokesperson said there was reportedly a party at the canal when the incident occurred.
Hausiku’s body has been recovered.
His next of kin have been informed of his death, and police investigations into the matter continue.
Meanwhile, also at Mariental, four suspects of which two are Foschini employees were arrested on Friday after they unlawfully removed clothes, jewellery and cosmetics from the shop without permission.
Shikwambi said the goods, which were valued at N.dollars 18 312, were recovered.
The suspects are expected to appear in the Mariental Magistrate’s Court on Monday, and police investigations continue.
In a separate incident, the police in the Kavango West Region are investigating a case of murder after the 19-year-old Limbondo Ezekiel was shot and killed by an unkown suspect at Rundu.
The suspect fled the scene after the incident.
The Rundu police are calling on anyone who witnessed the incident, or who knows the whereabouts of the suspect, to contact them.
Shikwambi said Ezekiel’s next of kin have been informed, and police investigations continue.
