Masters Football League to kick off in February

WINDHOEK, 21 JAN (NAMPA) – Former Namibian football players who are 40 years and older will soon be back in action when the Masters Football League (MFL) kicks off at the end of February.
The MFL currently has 12 teams on its books. Its commencement will see most of the retired footballers getting back into action in various towns around Namibia.
Speaking to Nampa on Wednesday, league convener Dawid Goagoseb said teams will gather in a selected town at the end of every month at events to be called festivals where they will compete in matches.
“Our league will only be played once a month and this will be in the different towns that have teams like in Gobabis, Windhoek, Swakopmund, Okahandja, Rehoboth and Mariental. We are calling on all former football players, including in the northern parts of Namibia, to start with their teams and contact us,” said Goagoseb.
He added that the league will also select its own national team which will represent the country in South Africa at the end of the year.
“During our festivals we will select players for the old crocks national team, and in December this team will travel to South Africa to participate in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) 40+ football competition.
“Last year we travelled around Namibia with these old crocks teams but we want to take it a step further by going out of the country. We will select our national team that will participate the country in competitions in South Africa,” he said.
He noted that players who have retired and are turning 39 years old this year will also be considered if they want to participate in the league.
The league will kick off in February and end in October this year.
Teams that are currently registered with the league are Roots Social Club; Tura All Stars; //Aes FC; Regkom Tani; Rehoboth Golden Oldies; Oanob Oldies; Groot Aub; Okahandja Old Boys; Graniet; Otjiwarongo Blakies; Gobabis Old Boys and Mariental Old Boys.
