ONGWEDIVA, 20 JAN (NAMPA) – The head coach of Dr Kalumbi Shangula Football Club (FC) has expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance in the Otamanzi Football League during the 2014/15 season.
The village-based Otamanzi Football League in the Omusati Region’s Otamanzi Constituency has four teams, and the Dr Kalumbi Shangula team ended in second position last season, which was won by the New Page FC.
Shangula FC also won the annual Otamanzi football tournament and the annual Okelola tournament held in their constituency last season.
Iita Noa, however, appealed to the local business community to emulate Dr Kalumbi Shangula’s example by availing funds for the development of football in the rural areas.
He said the Otamanzi Football League is without a sponsor at this stage, and is only funded by its four teams through the payment of N.dollars 500 affiliation fees each.
“It is our appeal to the line ministry and other stakeholders to come up with a programme ensuring that the village-based football game is also financially and materially supported, similar to what happens in the urban centres,” stated Noa.
Established at the Otamanzi Constituency’s Etilyasa village in 2011 with only five football players, the Dr Kalumbi Shangula FC has now grown to a team of 84 young footballers.
It was known as Onekango FC before it was renamed after former Environment and Tourism Ministry Permanent Secretary, Dr Kalumbi Shangula on 27 June last year.
Shangula donated football uniforms, bags and balls during the team’s renaming event held at the Etilyasa village on the said date.
The Otamanzi and Young Masters are the other two football clubs affiliated to Otamanzi Football League, which started in 2014.
