WINDHOEK, 17 JAN (NAMPA) – A 13-year-old boy sustained serious damage to his face, left hand and chest when an M-26 hand grenade he was playing with detonated on Friday at the Kehemu area of Rundu in Kavango East.
Ndumba Mukoya was admitted to the Rundu State Hospital, and his condition was described as stable.
Namibian Police Force (NamPol) Inspector Slogan Matheus said during a media briefing on Sunday, the child was playing at a dumpsite when the grenade accidentally exploded.
The M-26 hand grenade is of South African origin.
In the same region, a man allegedly shot himself dead after first injuring himself with the same shotgun at the Gongwa village on Wednesday.
It is suspected that Ndara Romanus Musese, 28, first shot himself in the left hand while herding cattle, and upon realising that no help is at hand shot himself in the abdomen.
The body was found 500 metres from the place where he shot himself in the hand.
His next of kin are informed of his death.
Police investigations into the matter continue.
