WINDHOEK, 05 JAN (NAMPA) – An apparent attempt to drive through a red traffic light led to a head-on collision and the arrest of a person for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol in the capital Friday morning.
The accident occurred at the intersection of Independence Avenue and Hosea Kutako Drive, when a Toyota Caldina sedan hit a Toyota Hilux pick-up belonging to Omega Security Service, which overturned after impact.
Speaking to Nampa on Monday, Windhoek City Police Senior Superintendent, Adam Eiseb confirmed the accident and the arrest of one driver saying: “Both drivers were subjected to mandatory post-crash-breath-alcohol-screening. One driver failed the test and was arrested on a charge of driving a motor vehicle whilst under the influence of alcohol”.
The suspect was taken to the Katutura State Hospital where a medical doctor obtained a blood sample for further testing. The suspect is being detained at the Katutura Police Station on case number CR 04/01/2016.
The driver of the Omega Security pick-up sustained minor injuries to his arm.
He, who requested anonymity, said he was driving down Independence Avenue en-route to China Town in the Northern Industrial Area when the Caldina appeared out of nowhere.
“I was driving through the traffic light because it was green and he jumped the robot [on Independence Avenue] and he hit my car. I tried to avoid the accident but everything happened very fast,” he said.
The suspect is expected to appear in court this week.
