OMAALALA, 04 JAN (NAMPA) The Okapya Liner and Idols football teams from Okapya village near Ondangwa are the champions of the seventh edition of the Sand of Armas New Year Football Tournament.
Businessman Andreas Armas of the Sand of Armas businesses at Omaalala village in the Oshana Region and at Walvis Bay in the Erongo Region sponsored the tournament, which took place on Friday and Saturday, with N.dollars 10 000.
He also availed an ox that was slaughtered to provide meals for the participants.
Okapya Liner defeated Ongwediva-based defending champions Kalola Kamukwaluvala 1-0 in the final of the veterans category.
They won the first prize of N.dollars 1 500.
Kalola Kamukwaluvala, as the runners-up, won N.dollars 1 200.
Omalaala Legend as third-place winners in the veterans contest walked away with N.dollars 800.
Idols were the champions in the youth category after handing Ongwediva City a 2-1 defeat in the final. They also received N.dollars 1 500 as first prize.
Ongwediva City took home N.dollars 1 200 as the runners-up in the youth category, while J Aron (third position) and Omusati Gwopoosa (fourth position) each received N.dollars 900. Speaking during the prize-giving event held at the Omaalala sports field on Saturday, Armas said the tournament went well as players demonstrated sportsmanship and were disciplined.
He explained that it is hoped that through the tournament, young people will find something positive to keep themselves busy with.
This is an annual event which will continue next year on 01 and 02 January. It is about keeping young people away from social evils during the festive season, he said.
Armas has been sponsoring the tournament for the past seven years. The participating teams are from within the Oshana Region.
