KALKFELD, 22 DEC (NAMPA) - The Minister of Poverty Eradication and Social Welfare, Bishop Zephania Kameeta on Tuesday handed over food parcels to more than 200 pensioners at Kalkfeld in the Otjiwarongo Constituency.
Kalkfeld settlement is situated about 70 kilometres west of Otjiwarongo in the Otjozondjupa Region.
Kameeta handed over the parcels of food containing maize meal, rice, macaroni, coffee, sugar and flour.
The pensioners were then also treated to lunch.
The food parcels were donated to Kameeta’s office by the Namibian Fishing Development Trust, which is made up of various local fishing companies.
Kameeta, who is the chairperson of the trust, explained that the fishing companies on a monthly basis contribute a certain amount of money towards the trust, which was formed to assist those in need.
The Otjiwarongo Constituency Councillor, Julius Neumbo thanked the minister for treating the pensioners of Kalkfeld to an early Christmas.
He said the minister’s visit to Kalkfeld is an extension of his regional familiarisation visits he conducted earlier this year to various regions to acquaint himself with the poverty situation in the country.
Kalkfeld was in 1991 proclaimed a village council, but it was downgraded in 1996 to a settlement due to low economic growth.
It has a population of over for 2 000 residents.
