KEETMANSHOOP, 04 DEC (NAMPA) – An all-Swapo //Karas Regional Council was sworn in by Regional Magistrate, Sunsley Zisengwe in Keetmanshoop on Friday.
Hilma Nicanor, Dawid Boois and Jan Scholtz retained their seats as councillors for the Keetmanshoop Urban, Berseba and !Nami#Nûs constituencies, respectively.
Veteran councillor, Paulus Ephraim was inducted as Karasburg West Constituency councillor and Dennis Coetzee as Karasburg East Constituency councillor.
Elias Kharuxab is the new Keetmanshoop Rural Constituency councillor and Lazarus Nangolo the Oranjemund Constituency councillor.
Scholtz was again elected as chairperson of the management committee after a nomination by Nicanor that was seconded by Ephraim.
Scholtz has a pending corruption case in the Keetmanshoop Regional Magistrate’s Court over allegations he wrongfully awarded tenders of over half a million dollars to a company owned by a close friend. The tender was issued in 2011 for paving of the offices of the //Karas Governor and the !Nami#Nûs Constituency.
Scholtz further stands accused of allegedly corruptly tabling and motivating to the Regional Council a financial assistance request for a company owned by his stepson without declaring the kinship.
He is set to appear in court again in March 2016.
In his acceptance speech, Scholtz expressed his gratitude at the re-election and said he was encouraged by the vision of inclusivity advocated and shared by the country’s president.
He said the regional council has learned a lot about the expectations of the people in past years and tried its best to deliver.
“We will work very hard this new term for the greater good of all while ensuring to stimulate an environment conducive for investment,” he said.
The region will be represented by Nicanor, Boois and Ephraim at the National Council.
