01 Dec 2015 18:40pm
WINDHOEK, 01 DEC (NAMPA) - The Fifth National Council (NC) will be sworn in on 08 December 2015 in Windhoek.
Ephraim Jane, the director for specialised services at Parliament: National Council, told Nampa on enquiry Tuesday that during their swearing-in ceremony, the elected National Council members will each take an oath before Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Namibia, Peter Shivute.
The 42 NC members were elected during the 2015 Regional Council Election held countrywide on Friday.
They will serve for a period of six years.
The 42 members consist of three representatives of each of Namibia's 14 regions, and they are to be selected at regional level before their swearing-in next Tuesday.
Before the third amendment of the Namibian Constitution in 2014, the total number of members was 28 - two from each region.
The NC members will after the swearing-in ceremony elect a chairperson and vice-chairperson among themselves.
Members of the NC are responsible to consider and examine Bills passed by the National Assembly and submit reports containing recommendations, among other responsibilities.
The term of office of the current NC members will end on Tuesday when the new council is sworn in.
