OTJIWARONGO, 26 AUG (NAMPA) - A 30-year-old man shot himself dead after he allegedly raped an 18-year-old woman at the Schenckswerder game farm on Saturday.
The farm is situated more than 60 kilometres east of Okahandja in the area of Ovitoto in the Otjozondjupa Region.
The Namibian Police Force (NamPol)’s Otjozondjupa Regional Crime Investigations’ Co-ordinator, Deputy Commissioner Moses Khairabeb told Nampa in an interview on Monday the deceased has been identified as Richard Mumba Mushitu.
Mushitu was originally from the Zambezi Region and his next of kin have already been informed, said Khairabeb.
It is alleged that the deceased raped the young woman at the sports field of Ondamekondo village in the area of Ovitoto. The incident allegedly occurred on Saturday at around 19h00.
“Our preliminary findings show that after the woman was raped at the sports field, her clothes were torn into pieces,” said Khairabeb.
She was forced to run home naked from the sports field, and is said to have locked herself in her house.
Mushitu then allegedly followed her there.
“He broke the door of the house down before allegedly raping her again,” Khairabeb explained, adding that it is not known whether the accused was armed or not.
Shortly after Mushitu allegedly raped the young woman, he walked to Farm Schenckswerder, where he worked as a general farmworker.
When he arrived at the farm, he apparently told one of his colleagues he was in big trouble without elaborating on why he said this, Khairabeb said.
Mushitu then reportedly went inside his house and a few minutes later, a gunshot was heard inside the house.
The farmworker was found dead, with a gunshot wound to his head. A shotgun was allegedly found in his hands.
Police investigations into the matter continue.
