MARIENTAL, 26 NOV (NAMPA) - The electronic voting machines (EVMs) and voter verification devices (VVDs) that will be used in the elections on Friday had by Thursday afternoon been dispatched to almost all of the Hardap Region's eight constituencies.
The Region Council (RC) and Local Authority (LA) Elections are set for Friday.
By 15h20 on Thursday, the last batch of sensitive material that will be used in Friday's elections was collected at the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN)’s Hardap office by polling officials who were escorted by Namibian Police Force (NamPol) officers to their respective polling stations.
Hardap Regional Coordinator for the ECN Isak Witbooi said the only constituency that were yet to receive election material at that time was Rehoboth Urban West.
The ECN was busy dispatching election equipment at the Rehoboth Urban East Constituency at the time of speaking to this agency, whereafter it would proceed to the Rehoboth Urban West Constituency in that town.
The Hardap constituencies where the RC and LA elections will be held are Aranos, Daweb, Gibeon, Mariental Urban and Mariental Rural, Rehoboth Urban West, Rehoboth Urban East and Rehoboth Rural.
When Nampa visited some of the polling stations at the Mariental Urban and Mariental Rural constituencies, the polling stations were already set up and under strict police guard.
The Aranos and Daweb constituencies will be participating in the RC and LA elections for the first time, as they did not exist in the last local elections held five years ago.
The constituencies were created after recommendations by the fourth Delimitation Commission in 2013.
The elections kick off at 07h00 at all fixed and mobile polling stations in the region. Fixed polling stations close at 21h00, while mobile polling stations have different closing times.
