Citizens Football Club (FC) collected three much-needed points when they defeated UNAM Football Club 2-0 here on Thursday. Citizens came into the match as the favourites after winning most of their games since the start of the 2015/2016 Namibia Premier League (NPL) season.

UNAM did not make use of the several chances they got in the first half of the match, with Edmund Kambala shooting a number of wide shots. The score was 0-0 at half-time. In the second half, both teams picked up momentum, but Citizens were more offensive. Dantago Urib scored the first goal of the match from a free kick after a tackle from Bruce Goseb.

The game got physical as Citizens pressured UNAM, who resorted to defensive play, causing many mistakes in the defence. Henry Somseb then scored a perfect header from a free kick from Johannes Seibeb after a harsh tackle by Heinrich Isaacks near the penalty box. The poorly attended Thursday match had Citizens dominating the last quarter of the game.

Citizens were third from the bottom of the league log on 11 points, but could move up five points if they win against Tura Magic on Sunday. Speaking to Nampa after the game, Citizens coach Geoge Ochurub said 'a win is always good'.

"We are at the bottom of the log and we need to fight our way to the top, so every win is vital for us," he said.

The NPL resumed on Wednesday after a two-week break to allow the senior national football team, the Brave Warriors to participate in the 2018 International Federation of Football Association (FIFA) World Cup qualifiers. Unam FC coach Ronny Kanalelo said his team could not maintain their momentum after the two-week break.

"We made a lot of mistakes, wasting many scoring chances. The team just could not click well and lost the game," he said.

UNAM are in fifth position on the log with 18 points.
