SWAKOPMUND, 19 NOV (NAMPA) – The Swapo Party candidate for the Swakopmund Local Authority Elections, Erkki Shitana has called on all members of the Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP) to join Swapo.
Shitana said this in his speech at a Swapo rally held in the Mondesa residential area of Swakopmund on Sunday.
The ruling party held a rally to campaign for the Regional Council and Local Authority Elections expected to take place on 27 November 2015.
Shitana said all supporters of the RDP must not vote for the party in the upcoming Regional and Local Authority Elections, but rather vote for Swapo.
“There is no more RDP. Go and tell all the people you know who belong to RDP to join and vote for Swapo. Even the leaders who started RDP returned home to Swapo, I therefore do not see why the followers should continue,” he said.
In response, RDP spokesperson Nghiningiluandubo Kashume on Tuesday shot down Shitana's claim of RDP “dying out”.
He said as a political party founded on the principal of democracy, rule of law and justice for all, RDP will remain as it is.
“If there are people out there dreaming that because of the few people who left RDP will die, those are pipe dreams,” Kashume responded.
Former RDP president Hidipo Hamutenya, who after leaving Swapo in 2007 and formed the RDP, returned to Swapo in August this year.
“I was at the receiving end of machinations and lies, which I perceived as deliberate attempts to tarnish my good name. This is why I left Swapo,” Hidipo told the media in August.
Earlier this month, Phillemon Kanime, Magnus Nangombe, Shapwa Kaukungua and Festus Naholo also moved from RDP to Swapo.
They all cited “misunderstandings” as what forced them out of Swapo.
