OTJIWARONGO, 19 NOV (NAMPA) -

A staff sergeant in the Namibian Defence Force (NDF) succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday at the Otjiwarongo State Hospital after a truck he was travelling in overturned on the Okahandja-Otjiwarongo road.

The spokesperson of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) in the Otjozondjupa Region, Warrant Officer Maureen Mbeha told Nampa in an interview on Wednesday the deceased has been identified as Ernesto Antonio Lato, 43.

"His relatives have been informed of his death," she said. Mbeha said Lato was a passenger in an NDF-registered Hino truck which was transporting cleaning materials from the Osona Military Training Centre outside Okahandja to the Ondangwa Military Base in the Oshana Region.

The accident occurred approximately 13h00 on Tuesday, some 45 kilometres south of Otjiwarongo. It is alleged the truck had a rear-right tyre puncture, left the road, and rolled once.

Four occupants, including the driver, were in the truck and they all sustained serious injuries. They were taken to the Otjiwarongo State Hospital on Tuesday afternoon, where Lato died at 17h00 the same day. Police investigations into the matter continue.
