OKOMBAHE, 02 NOV (NAMPA) – A prominent member of the United Democratic Front (UDF) of Namibia joined Swapo at Okombahe on Saturday, claiming that she was sidelined by her former political party during the election primaries.
Edlegandt !Gaoses joined the ruling party during the launch of Swapo’s election campaign for the Daures Constituency here on Saturday. She is a former member of the UDF's executive committee.
!Gaoses joined the UDF in 1970, and on Saturday threatened to punish the UDF by dragging more than 50 people with her to the ruling party.
“I decided to join Swapo because they (UDF) sidelined me and put Joram Kennedy !Haoseb as the candidate for the Daures Constituency.
“So I will bring along my people to Swapo,” she told Nampa immediately after being welcomed by Swapo leaders.
She promised to work hard to develop the constituency as an ordinary citizen and elder member of the community.
!Gaoses, who is in her early 60s, stated that she will introduce the people who follow her to Swapo when President Hage Geingob address in the Erongo regional star rally in Uis next week.
“I am here to work, so use me to recruit new members for the party,” !Gaoses said.
The Swapo coordinator in Erongo, Philipus Heita and Daures councillor Ehrnst Katjiku welcomed !Gaoses to the party.
Katjiku said: “This is a big blow to the UDF. She is one of the influential people for UDF here and for us to have her is a big achievement”.
Katjiku said her task of recruiting members to join Swapo already started.
“Go and persuade everybody to join Swapo for good,” he told her.
UDF Secretary-General Elijah Hage /Gawaseb on Monday told Nampa that !Gaoses was not sidelined.
“That is political propaganda. She did not show any interest to contest the election. Instead she was campaigning for someone else to be nominated. Unfortunately, her favourite candidate only gained seven votes and lost,” he said.
He said the party does not regret losing her because everybody is free to leave whenever they wish.
“It is a democratic country; she has been in the UDF for a long time since she was young. It is her right to move.
“Maybe Swapo promised her something better, we just wish her luck,” said /Gawaseb.
