Taxi driver flees after fatal accident

Cape Town – A taxi driver who fled an accident scene in Mitchell's Plain where a passenger died is still on the run, traffic authorities said on Sunday.

The driver allegedly lost control and his vehicle overturned on Weltevreden Road between Morgenster and Westpoort Roads in Mitchell’s Plain, spokesperson Richard Coleman said, three people were trapped inside the taxi.

"They were removed by fire and rescue. Among them was a 45-year-old woman who was fatally injured," he said.

Two passengers sustained serious injuries, while eight more were treated for minor injuries, Coleman said.

The patients who were trapped in the taxi were taken to Groote Schuur hospital for further medical care.

Coleman said police were investigating.
