Blackout at Gibeon village

KEETMANSHOOP, 20 AUG (NAMPA) - The power supply at Gibeon village was cut on Tuesday morning after the village council failed to settle its debt with NamPower.
Gibeon is situated 60 kilometres south of Mariental in the Hardap Region.
Three residents who run shops, take aways and bars at the village informed Nampa about the matter on condition of anonymity on Tuesday, saying they fear that they will suffer losses should the power outage exceed two days.
“I have a cuca shop where I also sell meat and it will be a big loss for me if the power is not back on by tomorrow,” said one business owner.
Another business owner who runs a take away where she sells ice and meat indicated that she will also suffer losses should the village council not sort out the NamPower issue soonest.
Approached for comment, Gibeon Village Council Chief Executive Officer (CEO) David Lamberth confirmed that the power outage was a result of outstanding debt, but could not say how much the village owes the national power utility.
Lamberth said his office is currently in conversation with NamPower regarding the matter, thus he could not provide any more details about it.
He could also not indicate how long the village can expect to be without electricity.
“I will speak to you as soon as we have discussed the matter, but for now I cannot say how long the situation will persist,” Lamberth responded.
