ONGWEDIVA, 22 OCT (NAMPA) - Footballers in the northern regions of Oshana, Ohangwena, Omusati and Oshikoto will compete in the first-ever Namibia Breweries Limited (NBL)-sponsored Tafel Lager Cup.
Oshana regional governor Clemens Kashuupulwa officially launched this new football event here on Tuesday.
He was joined at the ceremony by the Secretary-General of the Namibia Football Association (NFA) Barry Rukoro; NBLs Tafel Lager Brand Manager Vido Tjozongoro and representatives of football clubs in northern Namibia.
Speaking during the launch, Kashuupulwa commended the NBL for sponsoring football activities in northern Namibia where the majority of the population lives.
He, at the same time, called on other corporate businesses and companies to emulate the NBLs example by also contributing to sports development in the country.
The Oshana governor appealed to members of the public to refrain from criticising and discouraging those who are making efforts towards the development of football.
Tjozongoro, on his part, noted that the NBL sponsorship for the Tafel Lager Cup forms part of his companys social responsibility and it is about ploughing back into the community.
It is a very good and unique tournament for our regions, because never before has a football team taken home a winning prize of N.dollars 60 000, said the NFA coordinator in the Oshana Region, Sem Nekwaya, in an interview with this agency on Wednesday.
The NBL sponsored the tournament to the tune of N.dollars 345 000 through its Tafel Lager Brand.
Only teams competing in the NFA First and Second Divisions can participate in the competition.
The tournament would be played at regional level on the weekend of 05-06 December, with the finals set for 12 December at Oshakati.
