KATIMA MULILO, 20 OCT (NAMPA) – Three poachers nabbed at Kongola constituency with protected game which was illegally hunted at the Mashi Conservancy on Friday last week, have been granted bail of N.dollars 4 000 each.
Mathews Samapande Sinkumbwa, 37; Postrick Mashando Kachizongwa,42; and Sydney Mayumbelo Nyambe, 33; were arrested after the police found them with the carcasses of a Steenbok and two Impalas.
Also in the men’s possession were two firearms believed to have been used to hunt the game in the conservancy. The firearms had licenses but are not registered in any of the accused’s names.
During their first hearing before the Katima Mulilo Magistrate’s Court on Monday, the men told Magistrate Nomsa Sibanda they want to plead guilty as they are not objecting to having committed the crime.
Sibanda postponed the case to 23 November 2015 and granted them bail with one condition - that they do not interfere with police investigations.
The value of the hunted game has not yet been established.
The Mashi Conservancy is a community initiative situated 30 kilometres south of Kongola. It boasts major wildlife resources such as lions, leopards, elephants, and hippo, as well as various types of bird and fish species.
