WINDHOEK, 13 SEP (NAMPA) - An 11-year-old boy died at Omunkete village in the Omusati Region on Friday when sand was accidentally dumped on him while he was playing at a construction site.
Spokesperson of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol), Inspector Pendukeni Haikali told a media briefing here on Sunday Benedictus Ishinawa Petrus died shortly after the driver of a bulldozer accidentally dumped a heap of sand on him on Friday at about 17h40.
Petrus and six other boys were apparently playing at the site where the driver, an employee of a construction company, was busy dumping sand for the construction of a road in the area.
The boys were reported hiding behind a heap of sand he had made.
According to Haikali, Petrus apparently did not move away fast enough when the driver dumped a load of sand and he was covered by the sand.
The other boys immediately told the other employees working on the road so they could inform the driver of the bulldozer, but by the time they attempted to rescue him it was already too late.
The deceased's next of kin have been informed and police investigations are underway.
Meanwhile, the police in the Oshikoto Region reported that Laina Kashululu died on Saturday at around 20h00 when she was hit by a passing pick-up at Uuhama location along the Ondangwa-Omuthiya main road.
The 34-year-old Kashululu died on the spot.
She was apparently attempting to cross the busy road when the accident occurred.
Her next of kin have been informed and police investigations continue.
