BRAZZAVILE, 09 SEP (NAMPA) - Two Namibian boxers qualified for the quarterfinals of the All Africa Games (AAG) boxing event underway in Brazzaville in the Republic of Congo.
They are 2014 Commonwealth silver medallist Junius Jonas and Matias Hamunyela.
Both fought on Tuesday in the Round of 16.
Jonas is fighting in the 64 kilogramme (kg) category and Hamunyela in the 49kg category.
They are the last of eight Namibian boxers still in the competition.
Jonas, who outclassed Smaila Mahaman of Cameroon in their three-round bout, told this agency that he is now focused on his next fight on Friday and will his do his best to qualify for the semi-finals.
Mujandjae Kasuto said of his loss: “I really don’t know what happened in the ring today. All the preparation and tactics that my coach and I planned ahead of the fight could just not work. I am disappointed that this is my second time at the All Africa Games and I could not deliver as planned.
“But I should thank all those who were supporting me before and after my fights. I really appreciate it,” Kasuto told Nampa after the event.
The boxers form part of a 79-member Namibian team at the African Games that commenced on Friday and ends on 19 September 2015.
Namibia won seven medals - one gold, one silver and five bronze – at the 2011 AAG held in Maputo, Mozambique.
