Trial of Khorixas resident who killed wife begins in 2014

WINDHOEK, 12 AUG NAMPA) - The trial of a Khorixas resident who allegedly killed his wife by stabbing her to death in September 2009, will begin in the High Court here in February next year.
The 43-year-old Fanie Basson, who stands accused of killing his wife Johanna Basson at the Donkerhoek informal settlement in Khorixas in the Kunene Region on 26 September 2009, made a brief appearance before High Court Judge Alfred Siboleka on Tuesday when he was informed that the trial of his alleged murder case will begin on 03 February 2014.
This trial is set to run for a period of four days until 07 February 2014.
The fixing of the trial date was settled upon in an agreement reached by the accusedÂ’s State-appointed defence lawyer Titus Mbaeva, and the prosecutionÂ’s representative, State Advocate Jack Eixab here on Monday morning.
Basson is free on bail of N.dollars 3 000, which was today also extended until his next court appearance.
A summary of substantial facts contained in the charge sheet had it that Basson allegedly unlawfully and intentionally killed his wife by stabbing her about five times with a knife at their house in Khorixas. The victim died on the spot.
They had allegedly been involved in a heated argument over their relationship.
Basson will be tried as per the provisions of the Combating of Violence Act (Act Four) of 2003, which warrants severe punishment in case of conviction.
