JUDGING OF THE 30X30 ART COMPETITION ENTRIES

A total of 124 artists entered the Bank Windhoek and the National Art Gallery of Namibia’s 30x30 Art Canvas Competition.

A panel of judges selected the best ideas or concepts presented by the artists and based on their ideas and concepts submitted these selected artists will each receive one or more canvases.

Selected artists have to submit their finished canvas before or on 2 October 2015 to the National Art Gallery of Namibia or their nearest Bank Windhoek branch.

The judges will then select the top 10 artwork which will be bought by Bank Windhoek for N$750 from artists in the school category and N$1 000 from artists in the amateur category. The competition, aimed at discovering new and fresh talent in Namibia, requires artists to translate their creative ideas into any medium on a 30x30 cm stretched canvas.

The competition consist of two categories, namely a School Category for secondary school learners (Grade 8 to 12 and age 14 to 19 at the time of submission) and an Amateur Category for artists who do not have any tertiary art qualification and have not had a solo exhibition or participated in a curated exhibition.

“It was heartening to see how many entries were received for the Bank Windhoek 30x30 Art Competition. It made us excited to see the interest in this visual art competition. There were quite a number of artworks and entries of a very high standard and then there were also work from artists who need attention and tutoring to improve their work.

“Bank Windhoek and the NAGN who took the initiative to organise this competition should be applauded since it gives young, upcoming artists the opportunity to show their work and talent,” one of the judges, Elna Venter, said.

All the participants who submit their completed art work will receive a certificate of recognition and their artwork, dependent of the judges’ decision, will be displayed at an exhibition where they will be on sale to the public for N$500 a canvas.

Below are the dates of the competition:

  • Deadline for submission of final artwork: 2 October 2015
  • Prize-giving ceremony and official opening of exhibition: 16 October at 18:00
