OUTAPI, 28 AUG (NAMPA) – The 104 girls that are undergoing traditional initiation (olufuko) at Outapi in the Omusati Region on Thursday completed a mahangu pounding exercise.
Their custodians, mentors and supporters were on hand to assist them.
The Olufuko Festival initiation is mainly aimed at preparing them for womanhood. It started on Monday.
Outapi Mayor Matheus Ndeshitila told Nampa in an interview on Thursday at Outapi that besides the girls from northern Namibia, other girls travelled from the regions of Kunene and Hardap to also be initiated at Outapi this year.
“Most of them are learners, hence our decision to host the festival during the holiday so that we do not disrupt their schooling,” Ndeshitila said.
He explained that girls aged between 15 and 20 have been undergoing initiation at Outapi every year since the inception of the Olufuko Festival some four years ago.
The festival continues until 04 September, and Ndeshitila noted that his town is prepared to offer all the guests all needed services.
“Our business people are also benefiting from the festival by handling more customers at their business places than during normal days,” he said.
Close to 300 exhibitors are also showcasing their services and products at the festival this year, compared to the 278 exhibitors of last year.
