Young man killed by lightning

KEETMANSHOOP, 27 AUG (NAMPA) – An ordinary donkey-cart trip between two farms on Wednesday afternoon ended in tragedy when a young man died after being struck by lightning.
Jan Petrus Matthys, 25, was travelling with a 39-year old man and two minors from farm Kaalvlakte to farm Uibes in the Berseba area when their cart was struck by lightning.
According to Rudolf Isaak, Namibian Police Force (NamPol) spokesperson in the //Karas Region, the incident happened at around 16h00.
He said that five donkeys were also killed in the process.
Matthys died instantly while the other three passengers escaped with injuries and are currently being treated at the Keetmanshoop State Hospital.
Isaak described their conditions as stable.
Only light rains well below 1milimetre were reported at main coverage sites such as Keetmanshoop and Karasburg in the //Karas Region on Wednesday.
According to weatherman Odilo Kgobetsi however, active weather with distinct features such as thunderstorm cells and lightning were indeed detected in areas south of Gibeon and north of Karasburg.
Kaalvlakte and Uibes farms are located between Keetmanshoop and Berseba.
The next of kin of the deceased was informed and an inquest opened. Investigations continue.
