Nearly 40 000 registered in supplementary registration

WINDHOEK, 19 AUG (NAMPA) – Nearly 40 000 eligible voters registered countrywide during the supplementary registration of voters between 05 and 15 August 2015.
The supplementary registration for the Local Authority and Regional Council elections ends on Saturday.
A media statement issued by the Chief Electoral Officer of the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN), Professor Paul Isaak on Tuesday said approximately 39 461 voters have been registered so far. The Ohangwena Region tops the list with 6 196 followed by the Khomas (5 422) and Oshikoto (4 485) regions.
The statement said the registration of voters is going well, albeit slow, which could be an indication that most eligible voters registered during the general registration of voters in September last year.
He urged all eligible voters who have turned 18-years-old since the last Presidential and National Assembly elections; citizens who have moved from one constituency to another; citizens whose voter cards have been lost, damaged or destroyed; as well as those who adopted new names such as through marriage to go to the nearest registration point in their constituency and register to vote.
“The ECN will also afford the registered voters another chance to correct mistakes on their voters' cards that might have been made during previous registrations,” he said.
The registration points will close off at 19h00 on Saturday.
The Local Authority and Regional Council elections are slated for November this year.
