WINDHOEK, 12 AUG (NAMPA) - Namibia will send 79 athletes to the 11th edition of the All Africa Games set for Brazzaville in the Republic of the Congo from 04 to 19 September 2015.
The 2015 All Africa Games (AAG) will mark the 50th anniversary of the games, as well as its return to Brazzaville, which hosted the first edition in 1965.
About 22 sports codes have been announced for this years games, plus athletics and swimming for athletes with disabilities.
Namibia will participate in athletics, boxing, cycling, karate, swimming, tennis, table tennis, gymnastics, and sports for the disabled.
Team Namibia Chef de Mission, Roger Kambatuku told Nampa on Wednesday that it is very important for Namibia to attend these games.
Our athletes get a chance to compete against the best on the continent and the experience gained from these participation goes a long way in improving their games and becoming better athletes, he said.
Kambatuku added that he is hopeful that the athletes selected will perform better this year.
Four years ago in Maputo (Mozambique), we finished 19th and now we are aiming to better that position.
We have a great team of talented and quality athletes who can rise to the occasion on any day. We are aiming for a top-10 finish and anything higher will be great, he stated.
Team Namibia returned with seven medals - one gold, one silver and five bronze - from the 2011 AAG held in Maputo.
In its debut to the AAG in Cairo in 1991, Namibia won 13 medals.
In 1995 Namibia won eight medals; in 1999 Namibia won three medals; while in 2003 Namibia won seven medals.
In 2007, Namibia won three medals.
Team Namibia also consists of 43 officials.
Kambatuku will be assisted by Penandino Kandjii, who is the general team manager, while Annatjie Geleni will be team secretary assisted by Victoria Katukula.
Namibia Sports Commission (NSC) Acting Chief Administrator Harald Fulle is in charge of team logistics, while Irvine Ndjavera will handle the finances.
Namibia National Olympics Committee General Secretary, Joan Smit is also part of the team management.
