WINDHOEK, 02 AUG (NAMPA) – A toddler died when the shack he was sleeping in caught fire in Tsumeb’s Saamstaan area in the early hours of Saturday.
The boy, aged one year and five months, has been identified as Mariano Christiano.
He was allegedly left sleeping in the shack by his mother when a candle suspected to have been left burning caused the fire at around 02h00.
Namibian Police Force (NamPol) spokesperson Inspector Slogan Matheus told a media briefing here on Sunday the mother of the baby had allegedly gone to a local bar to look for her boyfriend.
The deceased’s next of kin have been informed.
A member of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) also burned to death in his bedroom at his home at Omuthiya in the Oshikoto region.
The incident occurred on Sunday at around 00h25 in the Kaniita residential area.
Matheus said the deceased, identified as Aron Nana Naanda, 24, was a constable at the Omuthiya Police Station.
Naanda was off duty when the incident occurred and is alleged to have been at home with his girlfriend who managed to escape unharmed.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined and police investigations continue.
