WINDHOEK, 29 JUL (NAMPA) - Namibia Premier League (NPL) champions, African Stars Football Club (FC) and Bidvest Namibia Cup winner, Tigers on Wednesday received their attire for the Standard Bank Super Cup.
The once-off Standard Bank Namibia Super Cup match between African Stars and Tigers takes place on Saturday at the Sam Nujoma Stadium in Katutura.
In its inaugural year, Stars lost the competition to Black Africa, who were crowned the first winner of the lucrative one-day cup competition with a 3-2 win.
Speaking at the kit handing over ceremony that was held at the bank’s head office here, Standard Bank Namibia’s Head of Human Capital, Isdor Angula said he is excited about the game, adding that this year’s event will hopefully be bigger and better than last year’s.
“We at Standard Bank are proud to bring this sports spectacle to the people of Namibia, as it is all about developing local football in our country.
“The magic of football is about uniting people and at the same time sharpening the dribbling and scoring skills of our local players,” he said.
Speaking at the same occasion, Tigers’ captain, Pekka Hamukwaya said the team is looking forward to starting off their season on a good note.
“It is a pleasure to be in the competition and we are ready to win it. Since the beginning of the 2014/15 season, we wanted to lift that cup and after ending our 19 years without a trophy this year with the Bidvest Namibia Cup, we would like to start the 2015/16 season on a good note,” he said.
Meanwhile African Stars’ new signing, striker Obrei Amseb said they are happy to participate in the Super Cup and will use their form from the Dr Hage Geingob Cup this past weekend to win the cup.
“The team is playing well and we gelled well in the Dr Hage Geingob Cup, so at the moment we are planning on taking that form to Saturday to win the cup for the first time,” said Amseb.
The winners of the Standard Bank Super Cup will go home with N.dollars 500 000, while the losers get N.dollars 250 000.
Tickets are available at Computicket for N.dollars 30.
