WINDHOEK, 21 JUL (NAMPA) - Kuisebmond Secondary School was crowned the First National Bank (FNB) Classic Clashes football champions in the third coastal clash of the year.
The FNB Classic Clashes were first introduced in 2008 and have since become one of the most sought-after sporting events amongst high school learners as they face each other in the sports codes of football, rugby and netball.
A media statement availed to Nampa on Monday by the tournament’s main sponsor FNB said Kuisebmond overpowered their rivals SI Gobs Secondary school 4-2 over the weekend.
In another match, hosts Westside High School won the fourth and last coastal derby of the 2015 FNB Classic Clashes against Arandis-based Kollin Foundation Secondary School 4-2.
Kollin Foundation’s Romario Cloete was awarded the FNB Man of the Match title in the game against Westside High.
The statement said Kuisebmond Secondary School left-winger Rivaldo Festus walked away with the FNB Classic Clashes Man of the Match title, while his teammate Jonas Sheyavali was selected the Namib Mills Hero.
Westside High’s Julia Kafugula was also honoured with the Namib Mills Hero title for her academic hard work as a dedicated learner.
The statement quoted Westside Coach Engelhard Ugam as saying his side was excited about their victory because in the past they did not perform so well, and thus in preparation for the FNB Classic Clashes match they had a different approach.
“We derived upon the strategy of mixing up young players with more experienced players in our team, this accompanied with stronger preparation turned out to be our winning recipe.
“The valued support from our peers tremendously motivated the boys to play well and elevated our team spirit. I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude towards FNB for really investing in our youth and the different school sports codes,” he said.
Ugam said that through its support the bank is encouraging learners to excel in sport which has a lasting positive influence on the young generation.
