WINDHOEK, 29 JUN (NAMPA) – The Namibia Schools' Sports Union (NSSU) on Saturday announced two youth hockey teams that will represent the country at the Southern Region Hockey Championships next month.
The Under-16 and U-18 girls’ national hockey teams will travel to South Africa on Saturday.
The Southern Region Hockey Championships will be hosted in Potchefstroom from 06 to 08 July.
The regional hockey championship is a Level A tournament where the top youth teams from South Africa’s provinces compete against each other. Namibia usually takes part as a guest team.
Speaking to Nampa on Monday, NSSU national coordinator Solly Duiker said it is important for the youth hockey team to travel to South Africa to take part in the tournament as this is the only platform where they can participate competitively.
“The teams will be in camp on Thursday to prepare for the tournament as this is a Level A hockey event where all big South African provinces will be competing. Our players can learn a lot from the teams they will be competing against,” said Duiker.
The U-16 team will be coached by Bianca Rehder and their manager is Magdalena Verral, while Lezel Amaraal will coach the U-18 team and their manager will be Susie Karstens.
The team is expected to return to Namibia on 09 July.
