KARIBIB, 25 JUN (NAMPA) - A former station commander of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) at Karibib was acquitted of theft in the Karibib Magistrate’s Court in March this year.
Court documents obtained by Nampa on Tuesday indicate that warrant officer Abraham /Goagoseb, now stationed at Keetmanshoop in the //Karas Region, received his judgment from Magistrate Lilian Mbaeva on 19 March this year.
/Goagoseb was charged with the theft of N.dollars 10 320 from the Karibib Police Station’s tea club between July and November 2004 while he was in charge there.
The money was collected from tea and food sold at the police station’s kiosk.
After a lengthy trial, the court found him not guilty.
When he appeared in December last year, the warrant officer denied stealing the money, saying he was assisting the government when he bought food and put fuel into his private vehicle with money from the tea club.
The State argued that /Goagoseb did not officially inform the former Erongo Regional Commander, Deputy Commissioner Andrew Iiyambo that there was no money at the police station, nor did he ask for permission to use the tea club’s money.
/Goagoseb had argued that he did not use the money for personal gain but bought food for prisoners and filled up his private motor vehicle to transport prisoners to court and hospital.
He said there was no official transport at the Karibib Police Station for a whole year because the designated vehicle was not repaired on time.
The officer said prisoners also did not have enough food and started complaining of hunger.
“I did what I could to meet the government halfway because it is my responsibility to make sure that the prisoners are fed and transported.
“I never used the money for personal gain. It is so unfortunate that things turned out this way,” he said.
Lawyer Annerie Keulder represented the officer in the matter.
The same officer appeared in the Keetmanshoop Magistrate’s court in April this year on a charge of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.
Media reports alleged that /Goagoseb assaulted institutional worker, Willem Bezuidenhout, after an argument over food.
/Goagoseb allegedly threw Bezuidenhout to the ground and kicked him several times after he (Bezuidenhout) refused to give him meat they were roasting at the inauguration ceremony of police accommodation barracks in Keetmanshoop.
His last court appearance was on 21 May this year, when the case was postponed to 23 July for fixing of a trial date.
