Two men appear in Opuwo court on rape and murder charges

OPUWO, 25 JUN (NAMPA) – Two residents of Opuwo who are deaf made their third appearance in the Opuwo Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday on charges of rape and murder.
Mungatjela Mashiko, 24, and Tazania Mutjauana, 19, were arrested on 08 June this year for allegedly raping and killing 52-year-old Taimi Shuweni Akuenye.
The incident took place on 07 June at around 00h00 in Opuwo while Akuenye was reportedly on her way back home from a shebeen.
The two men appeared before Magistrate Leena Tuyeni Iiyambo while the prosecutor was Aubrey Ndlovu.
Akuenye’s lifeless body was found lying in the bush near Opuwo’s Katutura residential area, and condoms were found near her body.
Mashiko and Mutjauana made their first court appearance on 10 June and the second appearance on 18 June was postponed to 24 June for the court to appoint a sign language interpreter.
The duo will remain in custody at the Opuwo police cells as their case has been postponed to 31 August this year for them to obtain the services of legal representatives.
They indicated that they will apply for State-sponsored defence lawyers to represent them.
