OTJIWARONGO, 21 JUN (NAMPA) The secretary of the Swapo-Party Elders Council in the Otjozondjupa Region, Hilia Shigwedha, has died after being involved in an accident.
She was 86.
She died in the Roman Catholic Hospital in the capital in the early hours of Saturday morning, Swapos Otjozondjupa regional party coordinator, Susan Hikopua told Nampa on Sunday.
Shigwedha was one of seven women who were involved in an accident at the Etunda Filling Station about 30 kilometres south of Otavi on Thursday.
Hikopua said the women were on their way back to Otjiwarongo from Otavi, where they had attended a memorial service for the late Otavi Constituency Councillor Ndapewoshali Nangula Nambili.
A minibus allegedly drove into the pick-up they were travelling in at the intersection between the Etunda Filling Station and the B1 road.
Hikopua said the pick-up was being driven by the secretary of the Otjozondjupa regional Swapo-Party Womens Council, Sussy Gideon.
Shigwedha was seated in front, while the five other women were in the back.
Shigwedha sustained leg and head injuries, Hikopua said.
She was transported to the Otjiwarongo State Hospital along with Gideon, who had also been injured, on Thursday evening.
Shigwedha was then transferred to the Katutura State Hospital, and later to the Roman Catholic Hospital where she died on Saturday morning at 02h00.
Gideon is now recovering in the Otjiwarongo Mediclinic.
Hikopua said Shigwedhas family has been informed of her death.
The Namibian Police Force (NamPol)s Otjozondjupa Regional Public Relations Officer, Warrant Officer Maureen Mbeha said the police will now investigate the accident as a culpable homicide case.
Police investigations continue.
