OTJIWARONGO, 19 JUN (NAMPA) - The Namibian Police are investigating a case of illegal hunting of protected game after a white rhino was killed at Farm Okamahoro outside Okahandja.
Okamahoro Farm no. 20 is privately owned, and farms with a variety of game animals including rhinos.
The farm is situated approximately 35 kilometres west of Okahandja in the Otjozondjupa Region.
The Namibian Police Force (NamPol)’s public relations officer in the Otjozondjupa Region, Warrant Officer Maureen Mbeha told Nampa in an interview on Friday the white rhino had more than 10 gunshot wounds.
Mbeha said it is suspected the rhino was killed some time between Monday and Thursday.
She said the rhino’s two horns estimated to be worth N.dollars 500 000 each were removed.
No suspects have been arrested in connection with the case yet, and police investigations in the matter continue.
Meanwhile, the Otjozondjupa police have indicated that two other white rhinos were killed on the same farm last month.
The rhinos were shot and killed on Farm Okamahoro no. 19, possibly between 11 and 13 May this year by unknown suspects.
Their horns were removed, but two of the smaller horns were recovered by the police in the area where the rhinos were slaughtered.
Police investigations in this matter also continue.
